Susan Conrad has written a book about her solo kayak journey on the Inside Passage. Exped was there at the book launch on May14, 2016.
In the spring of 2010, with her world scaled down to a 18-foot sea kayak and the 1,200-mile ribbon of water called the Inside Passage, Susan Conrad launched a journey that took her north to Alaska. On the way, she paddled marathon distances for weeks on end, forged friendships with quirky people in the strangest of places and pretended not to be intimidated by 700-pound grizzly bears and 40-ton whales.
Before teaming up with Exped, Susan was a customer. She used a Venus II tent and SynMat 7 sleeping mat on her trip. Exped team members met her on the west coast of Vancouver Island the year before her adventure, where she was training for the trip and we shared a small island. A few years later, after her trip, Exped USA sponsored a paddling film festival Susan was curating. And now we are supporters of her book tour. She is an excellent communicator of the humble and respectful approach to adventure that Exped wishes to promote. Her writing style matches her presence as a presenter: confident yet humble and approachable with a hint of a rebel beneath the surface. We like her!
This past Saturday, at the Seattle REI store, we had the honor of introducing Susan at the launch party for her new book, INSIDE. After speaking, she signed a big stack of books for the attendees - and sold every single one of them! INSIDE is a great read and Susan places her adventure squarely in the center of her life, rather than setting it aside as a separate event. We think it's an excellent example of how we can all find adventure between the competing pressures of life.
