How to chose the right backpacking mat?

Choosing the right sleeping mat starts with understanding the R-Value – the key to insulation and warmth. Here, we’ll explain what it means and guide you through the most important factors to consider when selecting the right backpacking mat.

The importance of R-Value

A good night outdoors starts from the ground up. The right sleeping mat doesn’t just add comfort – it protects you from the cold, supports your body, and ensures real recovery after a long day on the trail.

The so-called R-value refers to thermal resistance, a measure of how well heat passes through a solid material. Essentially, it describes the insulating performance of sleeping pads. The R-value allows for direct comparison between different pads. The higher the R-value, the better the pad insulates against cold from the ground.

EXPED was among the pioneers in establishing this standard, helping make warmth a central part of your sleep system. The term R-Value wasn't used in the outdoor space until 2002, when EXPED started working with the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Science and Technology and applied it to sleeping mat insulation. A couple of decades later, after working with tech houses, universities, and other brands, we now have the industry-accepted ASTM F standard.

R-Value isn't just about the thickness of your mat. Internal insulation also plays an important role.

Different insulations

SYNMAT TECHNOLOGY™

Recycled Texpedloft microfiber insulation, welded to the top and bottom of the air chambers, ensures maximum warmth over the mat's lifetime.

SYNMAT PLUS TECHNOLOGY™

Recycled Texpedloft microfiber layered on top of a reflective layer. Reflective layers bounce radiant heat back to maximize warmth while maintaining a lightweight and durable structure.

DOWNMAT TECHNOLOGY™

Excellent performance in winter conditions. 700 cuin down insulation with advanced chamber design ensures even loft distribution for maximum warmth at minimal weight.

How to chose my backpacking mat?

1 Intended use or priority

Choose the mat that aligns with your top priority. Ultra lightweight and compact, or enhanced durability. If you are a backpacker who's concerned with reducing the weight and pack size of your sleeping mat without compromising R-Value or comfort, then the Ultra series is for you. It has Synmat Plus Technology™, which boosts the R-Value. The ripstop polyester we use is durable and yet lightweight.

If you are a backpacker who goes into high-consequence areas where abrasion and puncture resistance are critical, the Dura series is your best option. It also features the SynmatPlus Technology but it comes with a stronger fabric to increase durability.

Ultra Series

Ultra lightweight and compact backpacking mats, intended for fast-paced, human-powered activities like hiking, trekking and bikepacking. It balances low weight and packability with effective insulation.

Dura Series

Optimized for challenging and coldweather expeditions, such as alpine adventures and camping under extreme conditions, with a focus on durability and warmth

2 Warmth

Aligned closely with their R-Value, backpacking mats are named based on their warmth rating. The two key things to think about when choosing a mat based on R-Value are the environment that you're camping in, and your own personal sleeping preferences. If you're camping in the summertime or in a warmer environment, it's better to use a lower-R-value mat to help you feel a little cooler at night. Conversely, if you're camping in the wintertime or in a colder environment, you're gonna want a higher R-Value to insulate you as much as possible against the much colder ground.

Sleep preference plays an important role. Some people may sleep hotter or colder than others. So think about that too when you're purchasing a mat based on R-Value.

EXPED recommends having a mat with an R-Value of between 6.5 to 7. Because ISO-rated sleeping bags are tested with 7R mats. So with recommend using a sleeping mat with an R-Value of at least 6.5 or higher to ensure your sleeping bag provides the warmth it is rated for.

3 Size

When choosing the right size of an EXPED sleeping mat, there are three main factors to consider:

  • Length: Choose the mat length based on your body height. As a general rule, your mat should be at least as long as you are for maximum comfort and insulation.
  • Width: The wider the mat, the more sleeping comfort and space you get. Narrower mats save weight and pack size, while wider versions are ideal for restless sleepers or extra comfort.
  • Shape: If minimizing weight and pack size are priorities, a mummy-shaped mat is a great option. It tapers towards the feet to reduce material and weight without sacrificing core comfort and warmth.
