Best backpack 2026! Editors' Choice for the Lightning
A great honour for our lightweight pack: the editors of Outdoor Magazine have awarded the Lightning 40 the Editors' Choice Award. The newly developed carrying system and the weight of just 1150 g were impressive.
Once a year, the editors of Outdoor Magazine honour products that stand out for their outstanding performance and genuine innovative strength. We are delighted that our Lightning 40 backpack, further developed for the 2026 season, is among them this year.
The only lightweight backpack that doesn't give me tension.
Best comfort and minimum weight
The testers are unanimous: no other lightweight rucksack is as comfortable to wear. Equipment editor Boris Gnielka even says, "The only lightweight backpack that doesn't give me tension." Weighing just 1150 grams and with a volume of 40 litres, the Lightning is reduced to the essentials and still offers the best comfort. This is mainly due to the revised carrying system.
Our new T-Rex carrying system consists of an aluminium bar inserted directly into the hip belt, on which the height of the back plate can be adjusted. And because the hip belt and the back support can move, the Lightning is not restrictive, says Boris Gnielka.
Lightweight material and practical features
The single-chamber pack sack is made of lightweight but robust material and is easy to compress. It is particularly practical for anyone who likes to travel quickly: The new holder for poles is attached directly to the shoulder strap and is therefore always ready to hand. The zig-zag compression straps are easy to adjust and, together with the roll-top fastener, allow variable volume control.
